• Question: Why do fish not live very long??

      Hmm, not sure that’s true to say – while there certainly are lots of species that only live a few years, there are some very long living fish like koi for example that can live over 200 years or orange roughy, which is bought easily in supermarkets in the USA live around 150 years!

      Obviously many fish don’t live long at all because they get predated or sick or starve but the same can be said of any group of animals!

      I had a goldfish I won at a fair (many years ago!) and it lived for 10 years until one of my friends looked after it while I was on holiday!
      It varies from species but providing they are looked after they can live for a long time. In the wild it depends on the quality of the water and their environment which is why it is important we don’t over fish, pollute the waters and eat the animals fish eat
