Animals (including us!) shed hair as it is constantly growing in a cycle, with new hair replacing old hair, and the old hair falling out.

shedding the coat may increase after winter because when winter is on its way several species will grow a thicker coat to help keep them warm in the cold months, this hair is the shed in the summer to allow a lighter summer coat so they don’t overheat.

different hair lengths is down to genetics being passed down from the parents, and down to the hairdressers!
If we were not so diverse in our breeding with other humans from different races then our hair would be more similar but we are a pretty diverse species and mix our genes widely hence various hair colouring and types
