I believe this is to do with the uniqe way they swim – tilting and bobbing in a ‘funny’ way!
They should’ve asked that in Finding Nemo..

“Clown” is a common term for many colorful fish. It usually indicates bright coloration and elaborate patters. Other “clowns”: Freshwater Clown Loach
