Currently electronic containment fences are used widespread in dogs, cat and there is some limited use of it with cattle. The system was originally patented and developed as a way for cattle ranchers to change the boundaries of their land without having to erect physical fencing.

As regards to how it changes the behaviour of animals – we don’t know yet, that’s what I’m trying to find out (for cats at least). Some trials of the product with the cattle were unsuccessful as the panic spread among the animals due to one individual being shocked and starting to stampede.

Are they aware of the electricity? Most definately – one of the most important aspects of the system is to train the animals to be aware of the shcok they’ll receive should they cross the boundary. They are reminded of this via a warning noise in the collar that alerts an individual if it is too close to the boundary.
