The problem with MRI research for the brain of animals is that animals have to be anaesthetised and so you don’t get a realistic reading, but MRI is used a great deal in research and has helped reduce the numbers of animals used quite considerably because we can observe the progression of a disease without euthanising an animal. I have not had much experience with MRI and brain monitoring but I have tried looking it up and I will ask around at work because we have people who use an MRI scanner, if I am kept in tomorrow I will have a better answer for you 🙂
I have spoken to the guys at work at MRI is regularly used for brain research with animals, we can see how plaques develop over time in the brain and how the brain deteriorates, If you type in “fundamental MRI animals” to google or Bing you will get loads of information on MRI and if Mr Dryden wants to find out more I am happy to contact him via the moderators here and find the answers to any specific questions he may have. I have also found a nice paper that explains it in more detail at the following link

you are welcome, it is really interesting science which is helping to reduce the numbers of animals we use 🙂
