      Hi beci,
I am not sure whether you want to know how a dolphin knows if another dolphin like him or how do you know if a dolphin like you as a human.
However what do you do if you like somebody? you can tell him/her directly but especially you may want to stay near him/her. Dolphins are the same, they swim closer to their friends or parents and when they approach boats if they decide you are not a threat and they are in a playful mood, then they spend long time riding the waves.
I guess the point is, stay close to whoever you like. Moreover if you are close to your friend is easier to pet them with your flipper or to play together by surfacing synchronously (at the very same time). Dolphins also share glances with each others.
They also are very good in showing if they dislike you, they may hit the water surface with their tails to show that they are disturbed and bothered or they can dive and disappeared far away.
