Pretty simply, as the cat is a super predator and the mice and birds are their prey, it’s the way ecology works!

Interstingly though, many domestic cats don’t eat what they kill, as they get high quality food at home. They continue to hunt though as it is a natural behaviour and instinct to them – a cat that isn’t allowed to express hunting behaviour (this can be as simple as playing with a chasing toy) will invariably get frustrated.

Even though people put collars on cats to warn birds some cats are so smart they can remain still enough so the bell does not scare the bird! The reason they don’t kill other animals is because they cannot catch them, some cats kill small birds and rats too so it is not always birds and mice 🙂
