The frontal lobe of the brain controls personality, however it is worth noting this is significantly more developed in humans than other animals. There was work recently that showed that the actual structure and shape of the brain affected personality with humans but we aren’t close to studying this in animals yet! We have a lot to learn about personality yet!

I think the external features and attitude of an animal tell us more about its personality but the brain can tell us how active its thought processes are.
