Your nerves are temporarily not working so you have no way of telling your brain what you feel – this can be the result of inactivity of putting too much pressure on a limb – it goes away generally though!
Also it could be that the blood stops circulating as well because of the pressure from weight, if it does not go away you should get it checked out, if it is just where you have leant on it then rubbing it can get the circulation moving quicker.
If you are talking about emotional numbness it tends to be matters of the heart and time will heal that too.
