I love this animal! It’s so weird! It lives in very deep seas, typically at around 2000-3000 feet. It is found there as it is it’s niche – an area where it can thrive and prey on other animals with little competition!

It has adapted greatly to survive this extreme habitat. Firstly, it has incredibly slow metabolism so it only needs to feed infrequently and can conserve its energy. Also their blood has adapted to deliver oxygen more efficiently and they have lost their inc sacs. It also is incredibly light and has specially adapted balance organs in order to float around the depths with ease.

It’s tissue is thick and gelatinous – this helps it from being crushed by the incredible pressure. Also its eyes are extremely sensitive – even picking up on sillouhettes and shadows of prey!
