It depends – we discover new species unknown to us previously over time – sometimes we discover thousands in a year!

But speciation (the creation of new species) takes far longer than one year to work, Evolution in the nautral world is slow unfortunately and measured on geological time scales as opposed to years and months! As such we will not see a newly formed species between 2012 and 2014, but we may well find several hundred we didn’t know existed before!

Assuming we don’t find any new species there are roughly 1000 million born every year, so 2000 million plus or minus a few million will be born by 2014! In other words quite a few!
