• Question: Can animals get things like autism?

      Yes they can! Although the reserach is in its very early stages, mice spliced with genes believed to be responsible for autism will tend to be less vocal than normal, and less social as well. They also showed repetitive behaviour such as intense grooming which was nearly caused self-injury.

      Obviously, this is something scientists induced and are using to cure autism, but it’s unknown if it occurs naturally in the wild – data on this kind of thing is hard to gather in the field as autistic individuals would likely have a low survival rate.

      If you are including Genetically Modified animals there are lots of diseases they can get, scientists have developed a mouse that can catch a cold from humans, which is not usually a disease we can pass between the two species!
