It is the final day and I just want to say what an amazing experience this has been! I love talking about my work and answering your questions! I hope you all VOTE today and have enjoyed this as much as I have! Some of you asked really insightful questions and there's no doubt in my mind there are many amazing scientists amongst you! I wish you all the best in your studies and hope I have given you enough reason to give me your vote!

Favourite Thing: Explaining my work to non-scientists and presenting research to colleagues – both are challenging and rewarding! Also any opportunity to play with a cat is always great.

Me and my work

My work aims to improve the welfare of pet cats and better understand the risks for when they go wandering!

My Typical Day

A lot of variation! I work with surveys, interviews, behavioural observations and liaising with cat owners, so what I do is different most days!

What I'd do with the money

I would like to host a one day meeting with chairites and companies to discuss the controversy surrounding electronic containment fences!

Obviously what I’m studying is greatly affected by more people knowing about it. Behavioural research on cats is of little use unless it can be made known by everyday owners.

This is why I feel it is so important to have this meeting – so as many different groups that have large contacts with the cat owning public can hear about what I’m doing and how it affects cats and their owners.

Raising the profile of my work in this manner will give the project a great awareness boost as well as allowing me important face time with these important groups so they can give me feedback and comments that will benefit the research and in turn, the lives of cats!

My Interview

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Irish bearded scientist?

Who is your favourite singer or band?

Tom Waits or The Pixies ( I cannot decide)

What is the most fun thing you've done?

Stand up comedy!

If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!

Infinite wishes (obviously), then a nice sandwich. Then maybe world peace.

What did you want to be after you left school?

I knew I wanted to do something related to Biology – I wasn’t sure on the specifics at the time!

Were you ever in trouble in at school?

Yes. I was a sarcastic, snarky child – which helped me become the sarcastic, snarky adult I am today!

What's the best thing you've done as a scientist?

My first experiment – looking at whether hunger affects centipedes rolling up into a ball. Disgusting but heartwarming!

Tell us a joke.

What is a cat’s favourite car? The Catillac.

Other stuff
